The Biden administration has been mulling new regulations for natural gas-powered stovetops for at least a year and a half now. Emails from June 2022 show that Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. consulted with an eco group in search of a legal justification for new gas stove regulations. The CPSC would later announce they were considering action, citing studies showing emissions from them could cause health and respiratory problems. Right before their announcement, Jennifer Granholm’s Energy Department separately announced they were proposing a new regulation on gas stoves.
Eleven Democrat Attorneys General have also urged the federal government to crack down on the appliance.
Back in June of this year, lawmakers passed the “Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act” to prevent the CPSC from banning natural gas stoves in a 248-180 vote.
